How to Prevent Neck Pain While Sitting at Your Computer Desk
Poor posture is one of the most common causes of neck pain in adults. The way you sit at your computer can increase pressure and strain on your neck, resulting in chronic or recurring pain and stiffness. At Arora Family Chiropractic, our chiropractors can assess your posture and work environment to determine how they affect your neck and contribute to your pain. When you visit one of our chiropractic clinics in Sherman, Plano, McKinney, Allen, or Frisco, TX, we can treat your neck pain with chiropractic care and help you prevent future neck pain at work and home.
Maintain Proper Posture
Maintaining proper posture while you sit at your desk can go a long way toward preventing neck pain. Keep your feet flat on the floor while you work, and your back against the back of your chair. Adjust the seat of your chair so that your thighs are tilted slightly downward. Keep your shoulders straight and level and your head centered over your shoulders. Do not cross your legs or ankles.
Switch to a Sit-Stand Desk
Using a sit-stand desk allows you to stand while working. This can improve concentration and productivity, reduce eye strain and muscle fatigue, and reduce pressure on your neck, shoulders, and upper back. You should try sitting for an hour and then taking a break. When you come back to your desk, switch to a standing desk and work for another hour. Then take another break and switch back to sitting.
Take Breaks to Stretch
You should take breaks every hour to walk around and stretch. This will ensure your head and neck aren’t in the same position for hours at a time, which can lead to neck pain, stiffness, and inflammation. When you walk around, you give your muscles a chance to stretch and reset.
Make Your Workplace More Ergonomic
Using ergonomic office equipment can reduce the risk of repetitive stress injuries that could cause neck pain. Use a monitor stand to bring the center of your computer screen to eye level so that you don’t have to look up or down to use your computer. Use an adjustable chair, a sit-stand desk, a wrist pad, and an ergonomic keyboard to prevent stress and strain on your neck, shoulders, upper back, and lower back.
